Istanbul Day 04 - Saturday

As I sit here - the view on the Galata tower, people passing by on the street, a sleeping cat on the pillow and the sound of the coffee machine on my left - I start to feel the comfortness that you get when you start feeling home.

I will tell you about yesterday, Saturday the 3rd day on the field in Aksaray.
We have to count the previous night to the day, since friday night ended up - after having amazing input from of Jan Rath, Sule Can and Kristen S. Biehl - with a traditional Raki evening which put us all in a tipsy sense of lightness. Raki tastes not as good as it looked like, but the served „turkished tapas“ along side made it possible to go through the evening. We continued the night in a nostalgic 90ies turkish bar, so full immersion into turkish culture - and full turkish hangover.

Saturday started off very slowly and we went to the field, had interesting encounters and found out a lot about our topic.
Vera, Rhagad, Ezgi and me research right now on a rare and valuable mushroom, the so callde desert truffle, that has been importet from Irak and Syria for the very first time to Istanbul. We had the chance to try it cooked yesterday and found out that tastewhise and identitywhise it can trigger a lot of emotions. Syrian people value it as a present from god, a blessing and mysterius mushroom that comes out of the ground and has all the potential to become westerner's world new super-food-gluten-free-and-meat-substitute. Let's see how far it will get in the next weeks. For sure we will start a export business to Sonnenallee.

Saturday continued with a first critique meeting where we got the chance to present our first ideas and discuss it with thre very diffrent teachers of ours. Tolga wants energy and strong images, Ulla wants us to be reflected and not generilizing our impression, Anna wants us to not forget about the spatial aspect of our actors in Aksary.

We ended the night with a glamourous birthday speech, a cake and all the possible blessing to our amazing and sweet Ulla, who is still part of the young people in our all impression !

                                               Happy birthday Ulla!

Istanbul Day 02 - Wednesday

As we woke up, the sun was shining and we had good conditions for our first trip to Aksaray.
So, the day has started with the meeting of paired groups (one Berliner, one Istanbuler). The whole idea was to get a first impression of Aksaray (more for the Berliners). Like Max said yesterday, it's about getting a feeling for the place, the crowd and the shops, which will help us formulate our research questions for the following days.
Additionally, the Berliners did already have impressions, thoughts and maybe even experiences from Sonnenallee, so they could make a comparison between the two fields.
We've just started to have a walk in the main street (Turgut Özal Caddesi). So, we got quickly into conversations with our partners.

After that, we met with two other groups and went with the ferry to Kadiköy. Still amazing just to think about the daily routine of locals which can use the ferry everyday. It's just a way for public transport, in-between of Asia and Europe where you can clear your mind in the sea air.

Ragat, Kübra and Haya on the ferry

Our next stop: two interesting presentations of Ibrahim Dizman (Sultanbeyli Municipality, Association for refugees) and Souzan Hajmohammad (Building Markets). Again, thanks for sharing your own experiences and insider knowledge!

Listening is quite easier with cay!

The beautiful nooks of Cafe Pepuk!

It was a really long day, we had a whole time full of input, fruitful discussions about similarities and differences of Aksaray and Neukölln. While we could talk about our impressions, thanks Ula and Tolga we also had some delicious snacks and a comfortable area.

Caution: discussion!

We've spent nearly six or seven hours in Cafe Pepuk. As we walked in, we had daylight. In the end, we walked out straight into the nightlife of Kadiköy.

The last presentations of the day

But all in all, I think everybody will agree with me, the cats in the cupboard were one of the most interesting things in Cafe Pepuk! Four newborn cats and cuddle time for everyone!

Istanbul Day 01 - Tuesday: First impressions of the Berlin students

Hello Istanbul!

about 15 people from Berlin have made their way to Istanbul the last few days since last Saturday, with the last people arriving on Tuesday before the workshop introduction. Many used the opportunity to come to Istanbul a bit earlier over the long Easter weekend to meet relatives and friends, relax and do sightseeing before going to work.

The workshop kick-off was the first time all participants got to know each other. We noted that there are a lot more female participants: we have the luxury problem of needing men for gender diversity! While the Berlin group has a diverse background of studies, over architecture, educational sciences and economics from different universities, the Turkish group from YTU are all urban planners at different stages of their studies, ranging from first years to PhD students and with different focuses of study.

After initial greetings from Ula and Tolga, we quickly got to the details of our work here in Istanbul. The main thing we all noticed is the interdisciplinary, comparative aspect of our work. A major challenge will consist in finding a common mapping methodology over several social science disciplines. Luckily, there is a lot of methodological, creative/multimedia and language skills between the participants, which we all hope to be able to use.

Attentive listening!

The main takeaway for Wednesday is that our first exposure to the field work is meant to be exploratory. It's about getting a feeling for the place, the crowd and the shops, which will help us formulate our research questions for the following days. We will approach these questions, collect the data and build our maps through the whole array of skills we have (which was impressive for me), over interviews, photography, film, discourse analysis and even digital drawing.

We really hit off well and collectively decided to make teams of two for tomorrow, always pairing one student from Istanbul with one from Berlin, nicely underlining the intercultural dimension of our work here. This will also help us stay flexible and pursue differing research interests. After finishing the introduction, we diffused into the Istanbul nightlife, eating and drinking together in different groups. The great start made us all really excited to working together over the next week!

The six-bed room in the World House Hostel enjoyed the great view from the balcony on Galata Tower at night before going to sleep a little to late. Sorry for the four-bed room with the rest of us, but you can come up to our balcony anytime! ;)

A few reminders...

01) Be an active observer during the field trip: ask questions, try to make connections with Sonnenalle, constantly ask yourself what kind of ideas can I bring to the table in the afternoon...  think about the similarities and differences between the two contexts. Note the places you feel like you are in Sonnenalle... try to make connections with your expertise/field (children, educational science, concepts in urban studies/social sciences)

02) Your main working groups will probably be totally different from the field trip pairing, which would be adjusted according to multiple variables such as knowing Arabic, mapping skills, video skills, being a Berliner/Istanbulite, discipline/background and gender.

03) Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will talk about Perec and his methodology to analyze and represent human behaviour (I forgot to mention today). If you have time just have a look at the book... it is enough to read a few paragraphs randomly... It is an example of using words to represent space and human behaviour and might be especially useful for those who have no experience on mapping or video making. Here is the link: Georges Perec, An Attempt at Exhausting a Place

04) Do not forget that you are in Istanbul. It takes time to go from one place to another, so make your adjustments to be at Pepuk Kafe at 14:15

05) and about documentation of our work on the blog: Max is responsible for Tuesday's post... Vera is responsible for Wednesday's post. We need volunteers for Thursday and Friday and Saturday and Sunday and Monday...
